a) Where was it?
Cyclone Yasi was a tropical cyclone that made landfall in northern Queensland, Australia in the early hours of 3 February 2011. Yasi originated from a tropical low near Fiji. The system intensified to a Category 3 cyclone at about 5pm AEST on 31 January 2011. Late on 1 February the cyclone strengthened to a Category 4 system, then early on 2 February, the cyclone intensified to a Category 5 system.

According to Tropical Cyclone Advice Number 21, at 9pm AEST (11:00 UTC) the system was centred near 24'00"S 147  06 00 E, "110 kilometres east of Innisfail and moving west southwest at 25 kilometres per hour."






b) What are the important weather statistics which make it a NATURAL disaster?

c) How did it effect communities?
Cyclone Yasi dramatically effected banana farmer around the area of North Queensland. North Queensland is one of Australia's biggest areas which farm bananas. This ruined millions of dollars worth of bananas and upped the price of bananas around Australia.


d) How have local, state, national government and emergencies react?
The federal government offered a $500,000 loan to the all business that were affected during the Cyclone Yasi. The cyclone being very strong, blew parts of building off the building. The Queensland government helped by helping emergency agencies to in the clean up response.


e) Are there any ongoing or risidual effects of this natural disaster or has the community fully recovered?
Yes, many families and businesses lost their houses and workplaces because of the cyclone. this may take a while to rebuild the properties. Also the banana business lost its crops for the year, losing them millions of dollars.
